Springing into football

Now that Opening Day is upon us and we know who’s in the Final Four it’s time to turn our attention to……UC spring football.

Here are a few things to watch when spring drills get underway Tuesday:

How do Connor Barwin and Craig Carey adjust to defensive end? Moving Carey from quarterback to defensive end makes sense because it gives Carey a chance to get on the field. But the Barwin move seems rather drastic and is a sign that the Bearcats don’t have much at that position. How much will Barwin buy into playing defense after three years at tight end?

How good is Kazeem Alli? Brian Kelly wouldn’t have moved a quality player like Barwin if he didn’t believe that he had an adequate replacement. Alli has been highly regarded since he arrived at UC. Now he gets his chance to show what he can do. The Barwin move might also create more playing time for Ben Guidugli.

Is Demetrius Jones the answer at quarterback? While Ben Mauk still holds out hope that the NCAA might see things his way, Kelly has no choice but to assume that Mauk is finished at UC. The spring will go a long way toward determining if Notre Dame gave up too quickly on Jones or if Charlie Weis knew what he was doing when he demoted him last year.

Will John Goebel push Jacob Ramsey at running back? Kelly decided to redshirt Goebel last year because the sophomore had so much potential. Now with the three seniors from last year gone, the position is wide open. Goebel will challenge Ramsey during the spring and both of them will face competition in the fall from heralded freshman Isaiah Pead.

How good is Adrien Robinson, a redshirt freshman who excites Kelly with his combination of size and speed (he runs a 4.5 40)? “There aren’t too many guys who fit his athletic profile,” Kelly said. “It’s going to be fun to watch him in the spring.”

I won't chastise you for Sunday's paper having O$U article now. I'm wondering who's going to play linebacker. That was last years weak link, and I'm not sure any improvements were made.

VERY excited about this season. Hoping to make it to 8 of the games.

This is gonna be the best Bearcat football season ever. I wasn't impressed with Jacobs last year and hopefully the redshirt can come in and win that position. If either one of them shows some explosion, and with the receivers we have, the sky is the limit for this offense...and in turn, the whole team. Looking for a BCS bowl this year

I think I said Jacobs. I meant Ramsey.

Demetrius Jones leaving Notre Dame was good for both parties. Charlie Weis does not run an offense suited for Jones, which set him up to fail. ND needs a pro style qb (either Claussen or Crist) and Jones' athletic ability will allow Kelly to install even more of his offense.

Perfect fit for both programs.

Can't wait! At least we still have one REAL sports team with a REAL coach. The QB situation should be very interesting and likely one or more will rise to the top. This should be a very interesting year at running back also. It's again the O line that we need to shore up. If that happens, we'll be very good on both sides of the ball. FOOTBALL!

WLMNMW -

Are you kidding me - can you make one post without bringing up how much you dislike Mick?

As for footbally - I am really excited about the spring practice season. My dad and I have been going to games since I was 6 or 7 (I am 25 now) and last year was by far the most exciting year ever. It will definitely be interesting to see how the RB situation works out and with a lot of skill at the receiver position, this offense could be amazing (and fast). On the defensive side of the ball - does anyone know who they are looking at to replace Nakamura and Williams at the safety positions? The Cats should be excellent at the CB slots, but the safeties and backers have me nervous - Bill, can you shed some light on this?

Good stuff in the Jones article. I'd be happier if he were 100% right now. It sounds like nothing will be settled until August.
