UC not finished yet
The University of Cincinnati basketball team isn’t finished playing this season after all.
The Bearcats learned late Sunday night that they have been invited to play in the inaugural 16-team College Basketball Invitational on Wednesday at either Penn State (15-16) or Virginia (15-15).
“We’ll find out our opponent (Monday) morning,” said senior associate athletic director Mike Waddell said.
UC (13-18) lost its last six games, including its first-round game in the Big East Tournament last Wednesday, 70-64, to Pittsburgh, the eventual Big East champion.
“To say that our guys are excited is an understatement,” said UC coach Mick Cronin. “When I rounded them up to tell them they were jumping through the phone.”
UC officials had been in contact with both the CBI near the end of the regular season.
“Last week, after the end of the season we sent out a note saying thanks for the consideration and good luck with your first tournament,” Waddell said, “just keeping in contact with them. We got a call tonight at about 9:25.”
Cronin said CBI officials told UC that the tournament was not concerned about the Bearcats’ record.
“They’re trying to get the best teams available that aren’t in the NCAA Tournament,” Cronin said. “I was surprised, but when you start looking at our strength of schedule and the way we played against Pitt. It’s arguable that we played them better than Marquette and Georgetown.”

Woo hoo! What a great tournament this is going to be. I guess it beats not playing if you really want to play in it, but is anyone honestly excited about playing in the CBI? I'm not. If they are going to take a team that is 5 games under .500 then it is a joke of a tournament.
I thought the idea of having the CBI as a competitor to the NIT was a decent idea when I first heard it. Still it seemed kind of lame, but competition is good so I thought it would be interesting to see how it went. Well, if the way it went is to have a 13-18 team in your tournament then it is a ridiculously stupid tournament. I would prefer more that we didn't accept the bid.
Wow. Just incredible.
Will this tournament gain a lot of credibility by selecting a 13-18 UC team??
I almost laughed out loud when I read this.
And Mick says the players are so excited? Too bad they didn't show such emotion and desire to win down the stretch when they needed the games to even get in the NIT.
Also, Mick has to throw in one of his comments about the team playing better against Pitt than the other teams?? Why does he make comments like that. His teams seem to play their worst after he does.
This whole situation is funny.

Yes, this will be a great tournament. Anyone who says UC doesn't belong there is nuts. With one of the toughest schedules in the country and a rebuilding of a prestigious program like UC, Mick Cronin has done a fantastic job. It is not easy to start from scratch and do something like this. It is very exciting for the players to get a chance to play again. And you guys who think that UC is just a 13-18 team, think about how many points separates them from being a 19-12 team with a Dance bid. Not many. These players have done all they could, amidst injuries and not much support from the fans. UC football is now in great prominence and just wait til' next years basketball team takes the court!!!
UC is a great program, yeah with a really bad president who killed the buzz of the whole state of Ohio because of Bobby's Buzz!
But look for them to make noise next year and I will no matter what be BEARCAT FAN FOREVER!! Say what you like, but UC had a great season, do your homework before you make rude comments like these, people.
This situation sounds oddly like the situation experienced last year with the football bowl game...

How many teams do people think are left with good records after the NCAA and NIT?
Let others worry about their credibility. The benefit comes from the additional practice and playing time.
It falls on Wednesday night so why not watch.
It beats your other choices such as whether the Heat or Knicks are tanking or just stink.
Sippin' Mick Moniker Maker,
What the Mick Lovers like to point out is what a GREAT recruiter Mick is. But, it makes all the difference when you are recruiting kids to play for real coaches with national recognition like Huggins and Pitino. Now he's recruiting kids to play for himself.
We have had a chance to listen to his rhetoric about how good last year's class was and then see it for ourselves. So did recruits like Hobson. Only the Mick Lovers and the Delusional Dreamers actually believe Hopson will ever become a Bearcat. The rest of us are actually facing reality. And the reality is that this team will not rise much above mid-major with Nancy's selection as head coach. We see this and so do the better high school players around the country.
So anyone who wants to can keep dreaming that this team will be back in two years. All I can say is that I hope your dream comes true! But few dreams actually do.
Playing in the CBI is better than playing in the NCAA, this is huge.
Its funny how if we were in the NIT, you haters would have no problem with Micks comment. You would be sitting here agreeing with him. Just because you are a tormented looser, stop running your yap like a fool. I am glad we have something post season and I am glad the kids are excited about it. Apparently they know it is better competition that you have ever faced in your lifetime. Winning this event will be more than you have ever done but, you are the one running their mouth the most. It's evident they are classier and smarter than you have ever been as well! You have made your stand. If the bearcats win this tournament, keep your expert anaylsis to yourself because I dont feel you can create cedible argument. Your judgement is blocked by character inadequacies. Its not the ncaa or nit but give it a break already. The season is officialyy over for you, quit watching and quit posting asap! You have no business here if you are not supportive of the team. Nobody cares what you got to prove. Go away like yesterday.
