7-5 in the Big East? How has this happened?

I was thinking back to the preseason and what was expected of this team, which was not much. UC was picked to finish 12th in the league by the coaches. Obviously, the Bearcats have exceeded those expectations to this point, with seven conference wins to their credit already, so they’ve been one of the surprise teams in the league.

You would have thought that of the Bearcats to be where they are one or two of their freshmen would have had to produce big years, but that hasn’t happened. So how have they reached this point where they appear headed to the Big East Tournament, possibly with a decent seed?

Of course, you start with the play of Deonta Vaughn, who has elevated his game well beyond where it was last year when he made the Big East all-rookie team. Then you factor in the play of point guard Jamual Warren, who in my mind has been the biggest surprise of all. Warren has been more valuable running the UC offense than I would have ever imagined. And I think he has surprised Mick Cronin, too. Remember, Cronin originally planned to use Vaughn a lot more at the point this year.

And although many UC fans don’t want to admit it, Adam Hrycaniuk has been an asset in the middle because of his ability to play post defense against some of the bigger players in the league. Unlike last year, UC has depth at that position with Hrycaniuk, Anthony McClain and Kenny Belton.

The freshmen haven’t been great, but they have made contributions. More importantly, they have given Cronin more options so that he can rest the other players. On the down side, I expected more out of Alvin Mitchell, who has been a non-factor and is currently suspended. And I thought McClain would be more productive, although he has been hindered by a foot injury.

Add it all up and somehow it’s working. Give Cronin and his coaches credit for that.

You had me until you said Adam H. has helped. He is probably one of the worst players to ever put on a UC uniform. They play better when his is on the bench. That is a fact. If you don't realize that then you are clueless.

Bill,

I have to say that I pretty much agree with your assessment at this time. After the first eleven games of the season and the Bearcats were 4-11, including losses to Bowling Girls State and Belmont, I wondered how many, if any, games they would win in the Big East. To be 7-5 after twelve games is absolutely commendable, considering the level of talent and experience.

If there is any area of disagreement, it's with the assessment of Adam H. Practically any big man with a brain and some athletic ability can set a screen and put up a measure of defense. Can one true center in the conference be named that is not at least as good as he is? Or as good? I cannot think of anyone, but maybe someone else can.

Overall though, I think the 'Cats are exceeding the expectations of about all fans at this point!

Where has Sikes gone? He lost his shooting stroke and then disappeared all together. I was hoping he would be an active forward with a feathery shooting touch. Instead he's barely on the floor and tough as a feather. He would be a horrible match up problem if he could drive to the basket occasionally.

Anyone who watched the summer league would have known that both Warren and Gentry had made tremendous progress. It was evident that Warren was the superor point guard and I commented that several time to this blog as early as last summer. Vaughn is a natural 2 and plays that way even when he is playing the point. Warren is a natural point. What I do not understand is why someone was not assigned to watch the games and inform Cronin. I know that Cronin is not allowed to attend the games. Warrens "injury" further complicated the process. Bishop has been a starter for most of the year and plays like a Soph. I expected Gentry to contribute more. Lastly, Cronin is a very good "game" coach and gets the most out of the available talent. The team has played big east opponents better that the record shows.

Adam has helped some in the middle with defending, but his lack of offense has also hurt the team considerably.

It is amazing how many easy baskets he has missed. I have never seen anything like it. I am also surprised that he has not developed his game at least a little bit to show some improvement. I wonder how much coaching has to do with this? Have the coaches worked with Adam or are they spending more time with the younger players to get ready for the future?

If he and McClain coudl start to add some scoring it would really help the Bearcats down the stretch. And I'm only talking about 6-8 points per game from each guy. But I don't think they have been getting that from either of them the last several games.

I was also hoping would score more. I think he has the ability.

Adam H. is the third leading scorer with 7.2 ppg, so I wouldn't bash him too much about his offense.

Remember, this is Adam H's first year playing in the most physical confrence in the world. So he's basically a freshman playing as senior.

I have to essentially agree with Anon 3:01 regarding Adam H. and the uniform. I almost cringe when I see him on the floor, and even more so when he has the ball in his hands. As a survivor of the Yates and Badger eras, there was a time that it honestly felt like UC would never return to the high life. I think now there's a chance, but unless Yates and Wright can do it and do it now, that time is still at least two years down the road. We've got a game tonight - let's win it!

Anon 4:31,

You almost have that correct. Adam H. is more like a senior playing like a freshman.

Adam H is still learning, so let's not be too hard on him. Yes, he's missed some 'bunny' layups but he has a physical presence in the middle that helps prevent guards from driving.

But I would argue that John Williamson is one of the biggest reasons why we are 7-5 -- without his stepped-up play, we are easily 5-7.

Why are so many Bearcat games on ESPNU?! Honestly, does anyone in the world get that channel? I long for the good ol days of channel 19!

Do you people not understand basketball? Its not all about offense. If Adam isnt in the game, who is setting those hard on and off the ball screens? Who is getting rebounds? Who is guarding the opposing team's center? You really want Belton or Sikes doing that and playing 30 minutes a game? No way.

Adam is offensively challenged, yes. But has been one of the teams best defenders for what he has to work with. Without him this team loses several more games. And all those close ones he has missed, I dont see Belton, Sikes or McClain being automatic from the field or free throw line either. (and Adam is a very good FT shooter).

I wouldnt want Adam as a long term solution at cernter, but he has been a nice stop gap this year without Williams and why McClain and Belton get used to D1 basketball, which they still havent mastered as well as Adam H has. He is not the best big man in the history of UC basketball, but I feel he will go down as one of, if not the most, underappreciated players ever.

I agree with 4:31 - I would have loved to see Adam with one more year with Cronin, and one year experience under his belt. If you laugh at that, consider what has happened with our leftover Jucos after one year's experience in the Big East and under Cronin. Who'da thunk it?

Maybe those months in between seasons are where the real improvement happens. A lot of times it's the thinking things over that effects the change, not when you're right in the thick of it.

If Adam could make those bunnies we wouldn't be having this discussion. If you watch him the entire game he does a lot of things well. But his offense...aaargh...but we still have to look at the entire product. He brings something now, but if he could make a layup it would be so much more.

Has anyone heard any news lately regarding recruiting, either BB or FB? It's been eerily quiet on both fronts. Any biggie prospects in the works?

I cant stand the Adam bashing from UC fans. I agree with you Bill. The kid is basically a freshmen and provides toughness and a defensive presence. I know he has missed bunny shots like it is job but come on guys you can not honestly tell me this team would be where it is today with out him. He has been an invaluable part of the offense in helping Deonte get open. Not to mention he is the best FT shooter on the team. Will we be better with Mike Williams, Yancy Gates, and a years worth experience of Belton and McClain? Absolutely. But for the love of god show some appreciation for a kid that comes in plays his ass off and has been a big part of the rebuilding process. I get why he frustrates people but a little bit better of a perspective is needed when we look back at the job done by this senior class and Adam H.

I will agree that Adam H's offense has left a lot to be desired, but those of you who are citicizing other aspects of his play are much mistaken. Post defense is not easy, and the post players in this League are some the best around.

Do you really think that Mick is so stupid that he's not putting his best players on the floor? If he had an alternative, he would be employing it. Obviously, Adam is the best option most of the time.

This team took a while to play together - hence the early-season losses. But they have been the big surprise of the Big East. They play good defense most of the time, and they have been horses on the baords for the last 2 months. Considering the cupcakes they played last year out of conference, this is a much superior team. This team agains last year's schedule out of conference is probably 10-4 instead of this year's 5-7. Add the 7 conference wins, and we could be talking about an NCAA berth, instead of the NIT berth we will likely earn.

GO CATS!

Au contraire multiple anons,
If Adam made most of those bunny shots, everyone would be happy with his game. I keep praying for Adam to have a good offensive game, but if he slows down Kentrell Glansberry tonight he will have done his job. I know it is embarassing to watch him miss those shots, but to me it is also embarrasing to watch Belton and McClain lose their man under the defensive basket. Belton and McClain are getting better and Adam is likely to foul out, but he is our best hope to box Kentrell out of the paint.

Bearcats have obviously improved since early non conf losses to Belmont, Bowling Green, Ill. St. and UAB.

How do you lose to those teams and yet have a winning BE record of 7-5?

BE is top heavy with top 5 ranked in top 25, but 7 of 16 including UC do not have an overall winning record.

Not sure if this is representative of usual BE standings, but it does appear that there's a lot of meiocre teams in BE this year.

Some of you can be absolutely pleased to your heart's content with Adam H. and his many accomplishments on the floor. In my estimation, and I've been a fan for decades, he is one of the least capable individuals who has ever donned the red and black. I'll be happy when this sad chapter of UC BB ends and we can focus on how good the teams are again and what our chances are of going deep into the ONLY BB tournament that really counts. Yes, it's better to go to any little tournament than to stay home. But, if we are honest with ourselves, we KNOW that there's only one that really matters.

One more thing: Does anyone else hate having the games on ESPNU or ESPN360 as much as I do?

Re the games on ESPNU etc, I'll take that over nothin'. Channel 19 terminated their contract cuz they felt the Big East was feeding them only bad games. The main ESPN Big East game schedule skipped over the Bearcats cuz they were so bad last year. Both lose cuz UC is a good game to watch this year in the Big East.

Tonight ESPN2 had Marquette and St. Johns. Dog game. UC USF much better. Much like in football, some of the Big East brainless trust thinks only in east coast terms.

As for Adam H., to say he is one of the worst players ever to don a UC uniform is one of the dumbest statements I've ever heard. He works and performs about as efficiently and unselfishly as Bobby Brannen, who is considered a fine UC player and who had a far better inside cast to work off of. Brannen didn't score a lot of games either, but he rebounded and played D. H. is an excellent team player, who sets mean picks for Vaughn and has a better grasp of the offense than anybody. His disruption of the other team's point and hustle back to down low, which slows down the opponenet's flow on offense, is critical to UC's improved defense. He does lots of little things well.

Biggie looked lost again tonight. Sykes and H. shut the big boy down. UC wins again, with a little luck and great defense, and once again people pick on Adam. I guess some people need a scapegoat. I think he's a husting maniac and a delight to watch, even as he makes me groan on the putbacks.

Another vote for Adam H here!
He understands the game - does everything right (except shoot) -
probably has no future in the pros but he's busting his butt.

My kinda guy - call me crazy.

Adam H. is FAR FAR from the worst player ever to put on a UC jersey. The guy plays tough defense, rebounds the ball well and hustles every play. He also came here at the weakest this program has ever been sat out a year to play. The bottom line is that we would not have won 8 BEast games without him.

ADAM H IS A STIFF.

HE IS THE WORST PLAYER WE'VE HAD IN A LONG, LONG TIME.

HE'S TOO SOFT, LIKE MOST EUROPEAN PLAYERS.

I'm fine with the ESPNU/2 coverage. I'll take anything over having to listen to the moron tandem of Buford and Piccoro.

Adam H. too soft, can you bench 315 pounds. I didn't think so.
