Remembering LaZelle Durden

Mick Cronin made a reference to LaZelle Durden today when we were talking about Deonta Vaughn and how he has learned to move without the ball to get open looks. Nobody did that better than Durden, who was forever running off screens and seemed to never get tired.

One of the memories that stands out from covering UC over the years is the night in December, 1994 when Durden scored 45 points to keep the Bearcats from getting upset at Wyoming. The team had begun a trip west with a 91-88 overtime win at Minnesota on Dec. 13 then flew directly to Laramie, Wyoming, where we spent four of the coldest, windiest days you could imagine.

Wyoming was coached by former Miami coach Joby Wright and his team had Danny Fortson bottled up all night. But the Cowboys couldn't stop Durden, who made 16 of 32 shots, 7 of 20 from3-point range and 6 of 7 from the free throw line. UC trailed by two when Durden was fouled while attempting a 3-point shot as time expired.

Durden went to the foul line with the crowd screaming. He held up his index finger to his lips as if to silence the crowd, then calmly knocked in all three free throws to win the game, 81-80. I still remember watching the UC players run off the court as the stunned crowd watched in silence.

Great memory, Bill...

Speaking of memories, interesting how Memphis is marauding through their CUSA schedule...reminiscent of UC doing the same thing. It'll be interesting to see how tested they are come March...

Thanks Bill! Over the last few weeks, this policy has digressed rapidly and it was high time for things to change. Moderation is the only thing that could save this blog from the two or three people that posted all day long.

at 6:05 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yes, it was getting bad. Enough people had complained that we felt we had to do something.

It's really great how the vocal moderator proponents are having their support posted left and right. And those "anonymous" pro-moderation posters may be only one or a very few. Those opposed to the "moderation", especially those strongly opposed, are being censored. Of course, this comment also likely will not be posted. Then again, maybe so to demonstrate that some semblance of free speech is still being permitted.

To me, opposing sentiments should be encouraged and welcome. A bunch of folks patting each other on the back about all of the great successes of a 12-12 season are just plain dull. They should, however be required to bring some semblance of maturity to the table (that goes for all) and to refrain from attention seeking shout downs and idiotic garbage throwing. Bill tried it both ways, and the "all comers bring anything" way was lame. Those questioning Micks recruiting and game tactics, bring it on. Cite examples and what you think he needs to do better to gain your support. Those feeling strongly the other way can respond in kind. To me, that's what makes it fun. I'm a Mick backer, but know that he still has work to do. I was also a Huggs backer who felt that he deserved to take this team into the Big East. It didn't happen, so you move on...

Whatever happened to Joby Wright? I thought he was a pretty solid coach.

I'm all for debate and opinion. However, when it gets personal and childish, then for me, it's time to go somewhere else. I'm glad they moderate it. This is a place for UC sports to be discussed, and like adults hopefully.

Ah, LaZelle Durden... the muse for Kevin Frazier's best nicknames... Calling Durden, "the gun slinger".

Perhaps thats what vaulted Frazier to ESPN and then to Entertainment Tonight of all places? Or not...

thanks for bringing that game up bill. I was only 15 when he won that game with those foul shots, but it's one of my fondest UC memories.

hey Dave:

I remain concerned with the team's offense the remainder of the year and next year unless I see something to change my mind.

I question why Mick has struggled so far in finding offense. Makes me antsy when it comes to Cashmere, Gates and others until I see them in person or hear something that makes me believe they can have more of an immediate impact than Alvin Mitchell.

Part of the team's problems on offense relate to the techniques as well, IMO. I do see more ball movement at TIMES than with many of Huggins' UC teams and more inside-outside work movement...BUT Mick sometimes seems to get too fixated to one game plan offensive and fails to adjust.

I also think he slows the game down a bit too much. I understand this year's team has some offensive limitations, but with the top 15 recruiting class in place that excuse only goes so far and will really not go anywhere next year. I think the team should score more points per game even now than they have and as such I'm a bit worried about Mick's offense.

I really wish we could get some answers regarding his focus on scoring points for the rest of the year and beyond.

Bill,

Don't know exactly how you're moderating the blog, but it is VERY refreshing to read without all the mudslinging! I've been reading (and occasionally commenting) for years--usually as anonymous--and then dreading the subsequent comments. I am all for reasoned debate (as much as that is possible in sports commentary), but things had really been getting out of hand. Thank you!

In addition, thanks for posts like this and like the Mitchell/Hicks comparison. One of the things I love about UC basketball is the tradition, and it is nice to relive good old times even as I look forward to new ones!

Lazelle Durden.....ahh, yes...

One of the great names in all of college basketball. A pure gunner with a dead eye when hot.

Some of those teams in the early days of Huggins era were such fun to watch. Saw Terry Nelson on Sport of All Sorts last night, and he has matured into an excellent analyst and shrewd expert on game break-down. His sharp mind stills glows. Had a gret quote, too.

What is done in the dark always comes to the light.

Referring to Sampson at IU. There
s whole nother story brewing. Storm clouds on the western horizon.

hey 12:16 am,

Bringing up the "top 15 recruiting class" without noting the centerpiece of the class, McClain has been limited in practice as well as games due to injury is a bit unfair. Not to say that Mcclain would have put up big numbers if healthy this year, but I dare say he would have given more valuable minutes keeping Adam off the floor.

Don't forget that UC was down 10 with 1:31 remaining in the game...and still won in regulation.

Although it was not one of the most meaningful games of all time, how can that not be the greatest comeback ever????

at 8:49 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

I can still see Durden making the 3free throws with no time on the clock to win the game. This game was the first time UC had faced Joby Wright not as a coach of Miami.

It is great to see the blog cleaned up, it was way out of hand before.

12:16 - I'm also concerned about the offense. We've got Vaughn and (until recently) not much else that we can count on. Williamsons presence in the post gives opposing coaches something else that they have to rely on. This year, we'll go as far as Vaughn can take us. Mick didn't have a whole lot to recruiit from when he came in, so to me, he's doing the best he can with the tools he's got. He can't outsocre people, so he has to out defend and out hustle them. I do think that they are (tentatively) relying an awful lot on Wright next year, and that's why I think we won't really know what we've got until conference play starts. Mick has much to prove, but I'm comfortable with the progress that I've seen. It's good to care about the games again!

The Durden free throws were great -for years after the shots, I would always immitate that moment when I would shoot hoops in my neighborhood and during my basketball practices. I will never forget sitting in my parents living room and watching #23 knock down the shots.

BILL - DO YOU THINK YOU CAN THROW UP A FLASHBACK MOMENT EVERY WEEK - IT'S KINDA FUN TO REMEMBER GAMES FROM THE PAST.

Wow! It's this blog so very much more fun now? The very few people that remain should enjoy the narrow discussions immensely. Sad though, that the distinction between censorship and moderation appears so very blurred. And, I'm VERY saddened by the fact that the blog now is so strictly moderated that comments are stifled or not even being attempted.

I don't see it as Deonta is the entire offense. Last couple games he's shot poorly again. He's only a soph, he'll continue to improve, but this team is executing its offense with discipline and getting guys open. That's why they are winning. Everyone's copntributing. Defensively Vaughn was a liability early with guys are running around, but he's getting less and less stupid fouls. His progress has been steady and sure under Cronin.

This year's Bearcat version is limited by either experience or talent. But they've made up for it with hustle, desire, and coachability. They are still in the hunt for a Dance Berth, for gosh sakes. Whodda thunk it in November?

Mick Cronin is one of a couple guys who deserve BE coach of year honors. I think his handling of this team shows how much he absorbed under two great mentors, Huggins and Pitino.

I'd like to see the trap-press used more. This team does it extremely well. The game at NC State, where they shot poorly throughout yet stayed in it to the end, was an amazing example of disruption and hustle. Creates lots of turnovers and disrupts flow. Kentucky used it constantly under Pitino during his glory years.

I remember that game in Wyoming, I was thinking about it as I read the article and saw the references to LaZelle... What a great game that was, I don't think the Bearcats ever led with time on the clock in regulation, and it didn't go to overtime, thanks to Durden's free throws. Having been to games in Laramie, I know how crazy that crowd can get there. Those were definitely some pressure packed shots.

Thanks for the memories, good job on the blog.

Do you know what Josh K is up to these days?

I agree that UC scoring is less than average, (especially with the likes of XU across town putting up 85 a night) but most of the Big East games across the conference are low scoring. I think it is a style of play that many teams in the Big East want to play. I think a couple teams (marquette and ND) have the outscore approach but the trend in the big east is to defend. How many other conferences do you see a blow out by 20 points with the final score 60-ish to 40-ish? IMO that is why the BE had problems matching up with the outscore approach of the A10, but i also think that tournament play demands the consistent defensive style of the Big East.

As soon as I read the reference to your blog in the paper today, I had to smile. That was the night of our wedding and my husband, a diehard Bearcat fan, wasn't able to watch the game. However, throughout the evening during the reception, he kept checking with the guard in the lobby of the Cincinnati Club to keep up with the score since the guard was following the game. At the end of the game, I think more of the guys were at the guard station than up on the dance floor!

One note, Bill. When choosing a title for your blog columns be careful. When I read this headline I became instantly sad thinking that a great Bearcat had died. Imagine my relief when I saw that the article was about that great comeback in Laramie.

Thanks for all of your work on this blog.

Anyone know what Lazelle is up to these day?

UC is very much alive in the hunt for a spot in the Big Dance. Most of the remaining games are very winnable, with the toughest being the last game against UCONN at UCONN. I think the remaining hom games will all be wins. I think Georgetown is very beatable. Pitt might be tough since Fields is back, but they are beatable. But even just winning those home games would put us in the upper tier of the Big East and good position for the conference tourny. Win a couple tourny games and UC could have 18-19 wins ... that would certainly be worth a look given that UC's SOS is in the top ten.

as an aside - is there any update on Mitchell coming back?

at 12:55 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

hey Dave/oldtime/9:42:

I agree with some of your points but not others.

Yeah the Big East teams seem to slow things down more, but I'm not sure I agree that style's more successful in the tourney.

Duke/UNC/Memphis have the right idea this year with their styles.

And I think Mick should start full-court trapping/pressing, etc. more. They need some easy buckets (not taken by H). It has worked at times and that's what I mean when I say Mick seems to get stuck on one kind of offense for too long.

He said he wanted that type of offense but other than a few flashes he hasn't used it much, even considering roster limitations, IMO.

I'll be disappointed if the game plan isn't more mixed up tomorrow night at the very least (between Vaughn and Williamson, etc.)

At this point in the season (24 games), the Bearcats are what they are. They have 2 legitimate offensive threats in Vaughn and Williamson. That's all.
Post play has been less than spectacular all year, whether it's Biggie or Adam H. Free throw shooting.....uh, no.
This team just cannot match firepower with firepower. This team can only win by using up the shot clock as much as possible (to limit the opponent's possessions), good shot selection, and defend, defend, defend, and get the loose balls.

The freshmen as a whole have been a disappointment this year. I expected more, but maybe next year. We all remember how Eric Hicks developed.

So I'm not sure you're going to see any new and exciting game plans. On a bright note, the game plans so far have resulted in a 7-5 Big East record, tied for 6th. Great year? Nope, but I see better things in the future.

In the meantime, I'll settle for a 62-58 blackboard nail scratcher if the 'Cats come out on top.

at 3:38 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yes I agree with those teams with styles for the tournament, but Duke lost to a healthy Pitt team that was able to defend and play posession basketball. I believe that game was in the 60's, A big East type game.

The final four is usually made up of 2 defensive oriented teams and 2scoring teams.

at 4:17 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Steve:

But that still doesn't lessen the concern about the team's future offense. Where's it going to come from? I hear positive chatter about Gates, Wright, Williams and other potential recruits, but I haven't seen them play.

With Mitchell and crew ranked so high, I would have expected more offense from them.

And altough they blew the double-digit lead, I think Mick's game plan in the UConn game was one of his best all year. I'd like to see him pull that up-tempo tape out again, perhaps at UConn or Pitt.

at 4:55 PM Blogger Monclova Steve said...

4:17,
We get it. You're concerned about the Bearcats offense. We understand.
Nobody can predict the future, so I guess we'll all have to wait to find out.
Your up-tempo idea is an interesting one. Let's see how it plays out.
All I'm saying is I care about W's, not how many points they score.

Lazelle Durden is back up in Rossford. I think that he and his brother, who was also a great player (think Barkley,) are working with children. I'm told that he has a son who played JV ball for the Bulldogs this year.

I remember watchingthat game with Lazelle iceing the freethrows with no time left at Wyoming. He had no doubt that he was going to make all three. Incredible. Up there with my UC favorite games with the final 4 run and the Bradley 4 OT game.
