Demetrius Jones on ND

Spring practice began today with Notre Dame transfer Demetrius Jones throwing down field for the first time since he underwent surgery last fall to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder. After practice, he talked about how happy he was to be at UC.

“Right now, the first day, it’s just getting out there, getting loose, learning the new system and most of all not knowing that you’re 3-9,” he said.

That 3-9, of course, was a not-so-veiled reference to Notre Dame’s record last season. Jones was the starting quarterback for the season opener vs. Georgia Tech but was replaced before the end of the first half after he fumbled twice, ran 12 times for 28 yards and completed 1 of 3 passes for four yards.

He did not make the trip with the team to the Michigan game two weeks later and eventually transferred to UC.

Jones now says it’s clear to him that ND coach Charlie Weis never intended for him to be the starting quarterback, that Weiss planned to have freshman Jimmy Clausen run the offense all along.

“At the end of the day you’ve got to understand that college football is a business,” Jones said. “I’m a man of integrity. I’m not stupid. I’ve never seen a quarterback lose a position in a quarter. It don’t take me much to read between the lines to see that that was (Clausen’s) position even before he came there and I was just in an unfortunate situation. As a man, I’m able to look clear cut at that. That was basically the plan, for that to be his position.”

Jones said the only reason he started the season opener against Georgia Tech was to protect Clausen.

“You’ve got to look at Georgia Tech and their defense,” he said. “Who wants to put a freshman out there against a whole bunch of guys from the South who are going to be running around blitzing? That’s why he didn’t send him into the game until the third group was out there.”

After Jones arrived at UC, the training staff discovered that he had the torn labrum, an injury that Jones said was diagnosed as tendonitis when he was at Notre Dame.

“People call it immature or walking out on your team,” Jones said of his departure from Notre Dame. “But if I didn’t leave we wouldn’t be having this conversation and I wouldn’t have my shoulder fixed. It was just a situation I had to get out for the benefit of my future.”

Another potential impact guy with a chip on his shoulder, with something to prove. I like that. UC football is full of those guys. They were either too small (Byrd) or not fast enough (Nakamura) or coming off injury (Mauk) or something that led them away from the big boys and to our quaint little campus. Nothing against the other guys, but if Jone's main problem throwing was really the torn labrum and it gets healthy, he's the starter and we could be looking at 3 years of Big East dominance!!

Can't say I blame D. Jones for leaving Pudgy Charlie and Notre Shame. I think that he'll be a real force to contend with at some point. It may well be a very interesting battle at QB. Don't count Grutza or any of the other QBs out so fast. As far as Notre Shame last year though, even Joe Montana would have floundered. It's hard to pass downfield when you're either on your backside or scrambling for your life. Anyway, I can't wait for UC FOOTBALL to begin!

how PATHETIC that the heralded Notre Dame never figured out he was actually injured.

why would any parent entrust their young man -- or why would any young man entrust HIMSELF -- into the hands of these overhyped Domers is beyond me.

Hopefully some of the young folks out there will learn from Demetrius' example. They will see that it was UC's professional staff that uncovered his injury and brought him to his full potential.

Glad for the identification and repair of the injury, but much of the interview came off as whining to me. Better to just talk positively about your new team and your new chances and let the past be the past.

The real question to me was... did Notre Dame really try to find out what the problem was? Or did the football factory only decide that they needed another body on the field.
It seems a little questionable at the least that any kind of decent trainer could have diagnosed the problem.... or at least seen the problem and got him to a doctor for a diagnosis.

to be honest did ANY of you people actually watch his first start? iv never seen a quarter back look that rattled in the pocket the very first snap. he has some potential no lie but he was terrible in the pocket he cant handle the pressure that comes with the QB position and to be honest hes just not that good right now. also that report is false he had his origional condition and the injury came after him playing if u watch the footage of the game he gets pretty banged up they all did except sharpley who managed to get rid of the ball and not just stand there. and plus i dont care who u are when the team is waiting for u to get on the bus and you dont show up at all and leave everyone waiting for ur while u enroll in another school without notifying the administration first thats just classless
