Thomas honored

This from UC:

UC athletic director Mike Thomas has been named a recipient of the 2008 General Robert R. Neyland Outstanding Athletics Director Award, given by the All-American Football Foundation.

The award, which is named in honor of the West Point graduate and Hall of Fame head coach at the University of Tennessee, will be presented to Thomas at the Midwest Banquet of Champions on April 21. The banquet is being held at the College Football Hall of Fame in South Bend, Ind. The award is given annually to those who display outstanding leadership and accomplishment in college athletics. This is the second time Thomas has received the distinction, having won it at the University of Akron in 2005.A

After Googling the award, seemd like it is given out each quarter to multiple AD's. Guess they are down to the U's now. But congrats to mike.

Good thing UC football is practicing again - finally something good to follow.

Go Cats! lol

What a shame that every single positive thing has to be turned on its ear by someone. No wonder we can't get the top notch recruits to come here. Congratulations Mr. Thomas, you're really doing a great job. There are many more sports at the school than basketball folks, and most of them are doing very well, including a football program that the University was considering dropping only a decade or so ago. Again, congratulations Mr. Thomas. Well deserved.

The irony of "Muskiesrule" saying:

"Good thing UC football is practicing again - finally something good to follow.

Go Cats!"

After a very tough start, Thomas has done well. He handled the hiring of a new football coach and the subsequent successful adjustments to keep that program progressing very impressively. The positive recognition is completely deserved.

That, of itself, is an accurate statement. However, if you would check attendance figures at almost every college, you will find that there are only two sports that are truly supported, i.e., cared about by most of the fans.

Those two sports are football and men’s basketball. Oh, there are a few colleges that support other sports, but by and large, these are the only two that normally support themselves and a portion of the costs for the other sports.

As far as top notch recruits coming here, it has probably NOTHING to do with this or any other blog, but almost everything to do with the coaches and teams, along with their potential. This is the main reason that one of those two sports is on the rise at UC and one currently is not.

Hopefully, soon BOTH will be ranked again, but we likely don't want to hold our breath about basketball being back soon.

BUT, football is going to be very exciting. Let's keep BK and the footballers rolling!

If and hopefully when Kelly is still here after 5 or 6 years, then I will give Thomas credit for hiring and keeping him here.

His handling of the basketball program needs no further comment.

Until then, congrats on this huge who cares award given to numerous recipients.

Bill,

Can you detail what the awards committee saw as the accomplishments of Mike Thomas? Honest question, I'm truly interested in what they look at/for.

UCFan79,
I second your question. So many people are only focusing on the current state of UC basketball as a way to evaluate Mike Thomas as an AD.

I think we can all agree that that isn't currently a great success story. But an AD has many responsibilities -- fund-raising, facilities, budgets, not to mention ALL UC sports teams.

It would be great to find out what the criteria are.
