My thoughts on UC-OSU football

Of course, it would have been nice to have Ohio State play UC at PBS in 2012, but Brian Kelly had it right when he said that OSU was only doing what it had a right to do under the terms of the contract that was negotiated in 2003. Before you get all indignant about OSU backing out of a commitment, consider that UC adopts a similar stance when it comes to playing long-time rivals Dayton and Miami. The Bearcats don't play Dayton at all and will play Miami only at Fifth Third Arena or at U.S. Bank Arena. The fact is that in college athletics, the big boys have all the advantages. That's why UC wanted to badly to get into the Big East.

I would much rather see UC and Ohio State play each other in basketball on a regular basis, but Thad Matta made it quite clear last year in Indianapolis that that's not likely to happen. It's obvious that the only reason OSU agreed to play UC last year was that the UC program was in a shambles and Matta knew there was no way the Buckeyes could lose.

In college sports, there's very little concern anymore about neighborhood rivals or matchups that fans want to see. It's all about how much money you can make and how you can position yourself for the post-season to make even more money. That's just a fact of life.

I know that UC likes to think that because it's in a BCS conference it is now on a par with Ohio State in football, but believe me, they don't see it that way in Columbus. And probably never will.

That's funny, that's how they feel about Ohio State south of the Mason Dixon line.

c. nye, Is Miami, FL south of the Mason - Dixon line? I think they felt (grudgingly; back in Jan. '03) acceptance of the fact that OSU has a pretty decent program . The only Miami that UC will beat is Miami, OH ... and its doubtful that will come in a National Championship game

Bill,
I don't quite know how to say this, but maybe it'll make some sense.
What UC and OSU agree on in a contractual matter doesn't really matter to me. Whether they play at PBS or in Columbus really isn't significant. I'm happy to see UC collect the million bucks.
But what fascinates me is the attitude of the fans who seem to base part of their own self-worth on the success or failure of the sports teams that they root for.
OSU fans feel that they are superior to UC fans. UC/X fans feel that they are superior to the other -- depending upon how their team is doing in a particular year. It goes on and on.
In addition, when many fans see their team lose, they have to blame someone -- usually the coach, or sometimes individual players. This allows the so-called fan to remain an expert while still maintaining their worth as a person.
Don't get me wrong. Criticism of one's play or coaching ON THE MERITS is totally legitimate -- I do it and welcome others to do as well. But just because our team loses, isn't as good as someone else's team that year, or a player doesn't perform as well as we would like, doesn't make them -- or us -- less of a person.
Hey X fans -- you're a #3 seed in the NCAA tourney. Hey OSU fans -- you're in the NIT. Hey UC fans -- you're in the CBI. You didn't do anything to deserve it -- and you aren't any better or worse than the others.

Actually I don't think that Miami-FL feels that way because they know you won simply because of som horrific calls late in the game by the men in stripes.
Plus they aren't in the SEC anyway.

ewad ... ageed. officiating was terrible. even color commentator Fouts (one of the leaders of the Big 10 stinks brigade) conceded that the refs blew 2 calls on one play that would have given the Bucks a 1st down with 2 minutes left (and, if you recall, UM was out of time outs). Gamble was not only held on a 3rd down play; but he also caught the pass inbounds with the linesmen calling him out and, as Fouts pointed out, the zebra refused to ask for help (this was before the replay rule). You probably don't remeber the play. Understandable. It is easier to remember plays that a) occur in overtime and b) support a point that we are trying to make (I'm obviously guilty of this myself as I clearly remember the Gamble play) As for C.Nye's comment .... he does not mention the SEC as you infer. His purported disdain extended to the entire country 'south of the M/D line' and I was merely making the point that I did not believe that the entire southern portion of the country cares about (much less holds in low esteem) about Buckeye football.
