UC-Ohio State football

I know a lot of you have been waiting to hear what's going on with the UC-Ohio State football series, what with all the rumors floating around today. I didn't want to post anything until I knew the true story.

Here it is, according to a UC release:

Ohio State indicated a desire to opt out of the 2012 game, which was to be played at Paul Brown Stadium, and had the right to do that under a buyout clause. UC then negotiated an agreement to play the game in Columbus, with Ohio State paying UC $1,000,000. The 2014 game, the last one from a contract that was signed in 2003, will be played in Columbus. UC will be paid $375,000 for that game.

"You know how I feel," said UC coach Brian Kelly. "I'll play anybody anywhere anyplace. My philosophy has always been that we need to play Ohio State. If they don't want to play here, I'll play them in a parking lot in Xenia."

WOW.....simply amazing! Run scared OSU. No need to man up and play us.

And people wonder why I don't like OSU.

Bill, did I read that right?

$1,000,000... and the game still gets played?

Is this normal for a buyout/relocation of site? How does this compare to the norm? Looks funny to me. I wonder when was the last time OSU lost a game to an in-state rival.

Run, rabbit, run. Money talks. Send in the hounds.

What I really want to know is where can I get tickets to that parking lot in Xenia?

Kind of odd that BK is interested in what happens at UC in 2012 or 2014. Does that mean he really is interested in staying at UC longterm?

I sure would like to see UC beat THE Ohio State University at their house.
Big time notoriety for the program and a million bucks to boot!

BK is so much fun to have around here! What a set.....

Anyway, can someone round up every single coach in any sport in this town and require them to attend BK's "Coaches and the Media, 101" course?

While you're at it, force the sportswriters/broadcasters to attend, too.

Agree with UCFan - we ought to strap Marvin to a chair and make him watch a DVD of the last year of press conferences of one B. Kelly.
Dusty seems to get it - as well.

As a UC fan, I could go the easy route like most people on here and bash OSU and make absurd comments describing how OSU is afraid to play UC.

But that would be too easy.

Bottom line #1: UC agreed to the language in this contract. A million dollars for OSU is nothing when you consider what they generate in football every season.

Bottom line #2: That one million dollars is going towards UC's new practice facility. Which is necessary to have any chance to keep BK at UC. So thank OSU for that.

Bottom line #3: Considering what UC agreed to language-wise, why WOULDN'T OSU use this option? How can you blame them - unless you have cold, hard facts that the $1,000,000 payout is hurting OSU.

If UC progresses as they should under BK - assuming he is still at UC - UC should be more than able to compete with the Bucks on their home turf. It SHOULD be two top 25, BCS teams going at it. If BK doesn't have the Cats at that level by 2012, we have deeper issues anyways.

Are they afraid of the Big East? Or are they confused to find out that there is more than one university in the state of Ohio?

you guys are funny. one decent year and now you think you can beat the bucks. this is no different than what BKEL is doing to Miami (OH)

LeeGero,
I too think this is a great thing for UC. They still play the game, and UC gets a million bucks.
I'm not sure why OSU would do this. I can think of many reasons, but I don't really care what they are.
Given UC's needs to upgrade its football facilities, a cool million will come in handy.

Is there a game in 2012 and 2014 or just one game in 2014?

Ok, I now understand from reading another site, we have two games with OSU, one each in 2012 and 2014. Seems that UC did the best it could given the debable that MT/Z put UC into financially with their mismanagement of budgets and decision making. Oh well.

Maybe they heard UC was going to join the SEC

Monclova Steve...very clear why OSU would do this.

One, language in the contract allowed them to. There's always a risk to losing to an in-state "rival" - but less of one when you play them in Buckeyeland.

Two, that million dollars they're giving UC is the equivolent of when professional sports leagues slap their multi-millionaire athletes with measly fines. Meaning, it's pocket change to OSU.

Finally, let's say UC keeps elevating the program right up until 2012. Any sane UC fan like myself would tell you that it's going to take way more than that to be on par with OSU's program. You're talking decades of tradition versus a program that most likely will still be trying to build one by the time this game takes place. That's reality. And that's what happens when you're easily the most powerful football program in Ohio, if not the country.

MsUC..
the financial debacle the athletic department is facing is largely the result of Bob Goin and Joe Steger's actions...i.e. Varsity Village and the new rec center...i'm not saying these are bad things because they are not!
Just don't be so quick to blame every problem on Dr Z and Mike Thomas.

Playing the game aqnd getting the $1 million is better than not playing the game. The reality is that there is no upside for OSU to play UC. IF they win, it's because they were supposed to. If they lose, it's the loss of the century.

I don't hold it against OSU for trying to get out of the game. And I think it's great for BK and MT to take the $$ and go to Columbus and play.

Go Cats!!!

Not sure how this one gets pinned on Zimper/Thomas since the deal was made before they got to UC. And I think Goin did well by getting OSU games where none existed before. This is a little about avoiding risk by OSU and a lot about money. OSU made $32M in football ticket revenue in '06 (out of a $109M athletic budget). So getting another home game is still very profitable, even if UC gets a $1M payout.

i understand why osu did it, i just think its cowardly. its not about money for them otherwise they would have never scheduled the game in cincy to begin with. they see a very real chance of uc winning this game and wanted out. brian kelly forced them to play it and pay a million $. otherwise kelly would be on sportscenter RIGHT NOW blasting osu. this would be humiliating for osu, especially since their reputation has already taken a hit the last two championship games. so they're doing the next best thing and making it into a home game for themselves.

leegero,
Can't disagree with anything you said.
I could be dead by 2012, but if not it would be pretty cool to see the 'Cats take down the Buckeyes in Columbus AND go home with a million.
