More on UC in the CBI

I just talked to Evan Olesh, director of communications for The Gazelle Group, which is putting the CBI together. I asked him why UC was attractive for his tournament given the fact that the Bearcats have a 13-18 record and a six-game losing streak that included a 45-point loss at UConn.

"There were a lot of factors that went into almost every team being in the tournament," Olesh said. "One of the factors from Cincinnati is that they did express high interest in wanting their team to continue to play. They wanted their seniors to hopefully go out on a high note.

"We were thrilled to have them. We understand they had a down year but we like the name Cincinnati. The way the NIT bracket panned out they took a lot of teams they normally would not have in the past. It put us in an almost awkward situation in filling our bracket but we like the way it turned out."

Olesh said that UC is on the road because UC officials requested not to host any games. He also said that UC and the other schools will be paid only their expenses, so the school doesn't stand to make any money off this deal.

Why would UC not want to host any games? It looks like they are embarrased by the whole concept.

I think its great we get to play on, but I am disappointed the school decided not to host any home games.

A 'bonus' home game at this point in the season would have been neat. Especially when it falls on nights that big dance is off. I think the school missed out on a nice opportunity to offer to supportive fans.

Bill, was there any reason why UC asked not to host a game?

So UC is playing because they were left in the bottom of the barrel ? .... Ouch !

Very interesting about UC's request to play, but not to host. It was indicated that the host school was the higher seed, but that might just mean home-court advantage, huh?

Smart move to not want to host.

I read on the bobcatattack.com the host school has to guarantee $60K and split it with the visiting school. That seems like a lot of money unless your program really draws a full house. Many schools in less populated areas don't charge the prices we see in Cincinnati, so I wonder how Bradley will come out in the end. Will student fans have to pay to make the guarantee?

Is this considered "pay to play?"

I think Mick is wise to keep Cincinnati's name in the basketball discussion this season for as long as possible. Win or lose, it can only help recruiting to have your program playing longer than other programs.

They requested not to have any home games?! The only way they should have even been doing this is if it had at least one home game! This game might not even end up being on tv, so the last image UC fans will have of this team at home is them losing. At least against Bradley, if they played like they did at the beginning of conference season, they could have won and left with a home victory. Now they'll have to make it all the way to the championship game to have any chance of hosting any game here. I'm sorry, but I just think that is wrong. Low crowds or not, they should have had one more chance to leave 5/3 arena with a win.

The only reason I could think of is that since UC has a losing record they should no rewarded for hosting a first round game. If UC wins and Brown win, will the Cats actually play at an Ivy league school, when was the last time that has happened.

the reason why UC is noy hosting any games is because of finals this week and spring break next week. also we dont profit off this at all

This is just so unbelievably exciting! Who would have ever guessed that after we had a run of MANY consecutive REAL tournament appearances that we would appear in this gutter tournament? Playing against Bradley and possibly Brown. After that, maybe we can play Big Girls State University again or maybe Coppin State. Oh, that's right, even 20 loss Coppin State is in the REAL tournament. Happy UC fans. Or is it - Happy, UC fans??

I thought it was odd that UC requested not to host games, until I looked at the calendar and relaized that exams are this week and Spring Break next.

It may not be much to look at now, but the younger guys still get a chance to keep practicing nad improve. That is important for next year.

Bill, is there any word about whether Biggie will postpone his foot surgery to play? Or will he go ahead and hav surgery right away.

Thats not so bad, 6,000 tickets at $10 a piece.
4,500 tickets at $15 a piece.
Or 3,000 tickets at $20 a piece.

ewad,
Don't forget that the Gazelle Group takes their cut out of that $60,000 also. Don't know how much, but I imagine it's a pretty big chunk.

After all, they're in this to make money -- that's why they require the host team to guarantee the $60,000.

I doubt if the schools are planning on making a profit on these games. Hopefully, they'll cover their expenses.
